Tattooing Event Raises $5,000 for Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Tattoos for Angels is a charity event that Brenda Barberena put together to spread awareness about SMA, raise funds for the cure, and most of all to honor her baby Bella Mia’s memory. Bella Mia was diagnosed with SMA Type I and earned her angel wings at only 9 months of age.
21 tattoos were performed, four piercings were given, and donations were received from start to finish. It was a family event where children from two weeks old to 17 years old were in attendance. Everyone from college students to grandparents all gathered for the same cause: to honor living and lost angels.
The event was hosted by Ink’d Chronicles in Pomona, California. The shop and artists effortlessly donated their skill and time to help fight SMA. 100% of all sales from tattoos and piercings were donated to FSMA. Because of their kindness, the very first Tattoo’s for Angels event raised $4,595! All food and beverages provided at the event were graciously donated by a local Fresh and Easy grocery store.
Three tattoo appointments had to be rescheduled due to the high turn-out, but these tattoos will be done on a later date. Ink’d Chronicles will still donate the proceeds of those three tattoos to FSMA. These tattoos will bring us well over the $4,595 that we have now! Also, Brenda Barberena is an employee at CarMax and has been approved to have her out-of-pocket costs matched by the company’s Matching Gift Program. CarMax will also be donating $10 an hour for every hour worked by Brenda, and these proceeds will be sent to FSMA. With the money earned by the extra tattoos and the CarMax matching program, this event will have generated more than $5,000.
The next Tattoos for Angels fundraiser will take place in Spring of 2011. Brenda is looking to make this a national event and encourages any chapters who are willing to team up with her and host a tattoo event in their town to contact her at email@example.com.
